As a hospice volunteer I met many people. Margaret is the one I will always remember.
On a Sunday morning, I went to meet my new Hospice Patient. Her name was Margaret, she was beautiful, 89 years old and her eyes twinkled. As we were getting acquainted, she asked what I was doing with my life. I told her about a class I was taking on Pregnancy Loss. Margaret started to cry, I asked her about her tears. She told me that she had lost her only baby when she was 20 years old. I asked her to tell me about her daughter, 69 years later she remembered every finger, toe and curl. She had never shared her story with anyone. 69 Years of a Secret carried. I was forever changed by her story, I made a promise to myself that even though I could not change her story or her loss, I could create a safe space for our stories of loss to be told, held and honored!
